Georgina Hernández realizó se tituló de licenciatura y se graduó de Doctor en Investigación Biomédica Básica en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Durante sus estudios realizó investigación en bioquímica y biología molecular del metabolismo de nitrógeno y carbono del hongo modelo Neurospora crassa, bajo la tutoría de Jaime Mora. Realizó una estancia posdoctoral (1986-1988) como Investigador Visitante en BioTechnica International, Inc., Agricultural Biotechnology Department (Cambridge, MA, EUA) dirigido por Frank Cannon. Durante su año sabático por la UNAM (2005-2006) realizó investigación en la University de Minnesota – USDA, Departament of Agronomy and Plant Genetics, y en el Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Plant Physiology (Golm, Alemania) colaborando como investigador visitante en los grupos de Carroll P. Vance y Michael Udvardi, respectivamente.

Actualmente es Investigador Titular C del Centro de Ciencias Genómicas (CCG), anteriormente Centro de Investigación sobre Fijación de Nitrógeno (CIFN) de la UNAM (Cuernavaca, Mor.). Fue contratada como investigador de ese Centro desde 1983. Fue Directora del Centro de 1997 a 2005. Ha servido a la UNAM en numerosos comités de evaluación, como representante en diferentes Consejos incluyendo el Consejo Universitario y como coordinadora de programas docentes, entre otros. Actualmente funge como Responsable del Programa de Investigación en genómica Funcional de Eucariotes del CCG. Es miembro de la Academia Mexicana de Ciencias, de la cuál fungió como Tesorera (2014-2017). Es Investigador Nacional Nivel 3 del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores.

Desde hace casi 30 años realiza investigación en el área de la Biología Vegetal, relacionada con el metabolismo nitrogenado de plantas y, principalmente, con la fijación simbiótica de nitrógeno (SNF) de plantas leguminosas en simbiosis con las bacterias del suelo “Rhizobia“. La investigación actual de su grupo, en colaboración con colegas de diferentes países, se enfoca en la SNF del frijol (Phaseolus vulgaris) que es la leguminosa más importante para el consumo humano a nivel mundial. Su trabajo pionero contribuyó a desarrollar la genómica funcional de P. vulgaris, principalmente la transcriptómica y la metabolómica. Usando estos enfoques ella investiga los diferentes niveles de regulación de la expresión genómica en la SNF del frijol, incluyendo los niveles transcipcional y post-transcripcional para descifrar nuevos reguladores globales de la simbiosis tales como factores de transcripción, microRNAs y el papel del “splicing alternativo”. Sus contribuciones científicas han sido publicadas en más de 50 artículos en revistas internacionales de prestigio, han recibido más de 2,000 citas en la literatura (Indice N = 24) y son reconocidas por sus colegas del área.

Desde el inicio de su carrera ella ha contribuido con la docencia a nivel de licenciatura y posgrado así como a la formación de recursos humanos para la ciencia a través de asesorar posdoctorados y estudiantes de doctorado.
